How Timber Weight Is Calculated
The estimated timber weight is calculated from timber volume and the density of the selected wood species.
Weight = Volume × Density
Estimated results only. Actual timber weight may vary with moisture content, species variation, grade and drying condition.

Timber Weight Calculator for Hardwood and Softwood

The AtoZ Wood Company Timber Weight Calculator is an easy-to-use online tool for estimating the weight of sawn timber, boards, planks, beams and other rectangular timber products.

Enter the timber length, width and thickness, select the measurement unit, choose the wood species and enter the quantity. The calculator instantly estimates the total timber volume and weight.

This tool can help timber buyers, importers, exporters, manufacturers and logistics planners estimate the approximate weight of a timber order before purchase, processing or shipment.

How to Calculate Timber Weight

1. Enter the Timber Dimensions

Enter the length, width and thickness of the timber piece. The calculator supports millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches and feet.

2. Select the Wood Species

Choose the timber species that matches your material. The calculator uses an approximate density value for the selected species.

3. Enter the Quantity

Enter the number of pieces in your timber order. The calculator automatically calculates the combined volume and estimated weight.

4. Review the Result

The calculator displays total volume in cubic metres, estimated weight in kilograms, weight in tonnes and total timber pieces.

Timber Weight Formula

For rectangular sawn timber, volume is determined from length, width, thickness and quantity.

Once the volume has been calculated, multiply the volume by the density of the wood species:

Timber Weight = Timber Volume × Wood Density

For example, timber with a total volume of 2 m³ and an estimated density of 650 kg/m³ would have an estimated weight of approximately 1,300 kg.

Why Use This Timber Weight Calculator?

Multiple Sizes

Add multiple timber dimensions and calculate their combined weight and volume.

Multiple Units

Work with mm, cm, metres, inches or feet without manually converting the measurements.

Weight & Volume

Get estimated timber volume and weight in both kilograms and tonnes.

Wood Density and Timber Weight

Wood density differs between timber species and can also vary within the same species. Moisture content, growing conditions, heartwood, sapwood and drying conditions can all influence the actual weight.

The density values used by this calculator are approximate reference values. For commercial timber shipments, the actual weight should be confirmed using the timber's condition and applicable shipping or weighing documentation.

The calculator also includes a Custom Density option. This allows you to enter a known density supplied by a timber producer or obtained from testing.

Who Can Use a Timber Weight Calculator?

  • Timber importers and exporters
  • Hardwood and softwood buyers
  • Furniture manufacturers
  • Construction companies
  • Timber wholesalers and distributors
  • Sawmills and timber processors
  • Shipping and logistics planners
  • Woodworking professionals
  • International timber purchasing teams

Timber Weight vs Shipping Weight

The weight calculated by this tool is an estimated timber weight based on dimensions and wood density. The final shipping weight can be higher because of moisture, packaging, pallets, loading materials and other cargo-related factors.

For container loading and international shipment planning, buyers should use the actual timber specifications and the applicable requirements of their shipping carrier, port and destination.

Timber Weight Calculator FAQs

A timber weight calculator estimates the weight of timber using its dimensions, quantity and the estimated density of the selected wood species.
Timber weight is estimated by calculating the timber volume and multiplying that volume by the density of the wood species.
Yes. Use the Add Timber button to create additional rows for different timber dimensions. The calculator combines all rows in the final result.
The calculator supports millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches and feet.
Yes. Timber containing more moisture generally weighs more than dried timber of the same dimensions. This is why calculated results should be treated as estimates.
Yes. Select Custom Density from the species list and enter your known density in kilograms per cubic metre.
This calculator is primarily designed for rectangular sawn timber, boards, planks and beams. Round logs require a diameter-based calculation.
No. It is an estimate based on the selected density and entered dimensions. Actual timber weight can vary because of moisture content, species variation, grade and drying condition.
